Scottee 10
10 years ago I started taking myself a bit more seriously. After 5 years of knocking about nightclubs, putting on performance and dress up parties for queer kids in London I attempted to self legitimise and become an artist - I became Scottee.
Black Friday 2017 | Support the Arts
I’m an independent artist and activist based in Essex, working across UK. I didn't train to be an artist, I was expelled from school at 13 yrs old and was never put back into education, I never went to uni - I am making all of this up as I go along.
Working Class | 2017
Weirdos! Fond followers will know that every year I do a limited edition print. These help me keep the lights on in the winter months, fund me to throw the toys out the pram more often and they look nice in your houses.
My name is Scottee and I’m a Recovering Drag Addict
Last week I met a new collaborator, someone I’ve never met in real life before. As I downed a mug of strong tea he suspiciously approached and said “...you must be Scottee! I was expecting something quite different!”
Look Mum, I'm on the Telly, Radio and Internet
I’m doing the rounds, I’m one documentary away from being Ann Robinson or perhaps Clarissa Dickson Wright is more apt.
Role Models, Icons and The Church of Beth Ditto
When people ask me who my favourite pop star, celebrity or famous crush is my mind draws a blank. Who is it I idolise? Who is my biggest role-model? Who do I want to be when I finally grow up?
Pride in Peterborough?
Over the last 6 months I have been in residence at Metal Peterborough, creating work under the project title 'Queer Peterborough'…
Notes on Class
Last September I handed over the keys to my council flat. London (my birthplace and hometown) has become an expensive, exploitive monster that I can’t keep up with. My husband decided to leave the security of social housing because we also wanted to move towards extending our family.
Why Bother?
This week, as part of Kiertoliike 2017 I gave the arts sector in Finland a lecture on the urgency of engaged art. It explored where I saw the problem and who was to blame.
How I’m Learning About my Whiteness
Yesterday, Piers Morgan hammered out yet another 900 words for a newspaper that will still publish his thoughts. Titled ‘Why Can’t White Girls Say Racist Things if They Are Sung, Huh?’ Morgan stamps his feet and proclaims white teenage girls are confused…
I Fear Working Class Men
Sometimes you have to say things that may annoy folk because it’s the only way into discussing a painful truth. My painful truth is that I fear working class men.
Bravado UK Tour
Scottee grew up around strong, brave and violent men and boys. BRAVADO is his memoir of working class masculinity from 1991 to 1999 as seen by a sheep in wolves clothing.
Self Love, Body Acceptance and Other Ways to get Famous
There’s a new movement that you might be unaware of. It largely exists on instagram, it’s founders are internet famous and it has a massive cult following - some call it self love, others call it body acceptance or body confidence but what lurks beneath its hashtagged manifesto is a desire for fame, popularity and likes.
Liam Gallagher was my Grandad
As many of you would have seen from my posts, Grandad passed away on Saturday 29th July at 3pm, surrounded by his children, my Mum cuddling him as he exited stage left.
Radical Fatties
I’ve been mouthing off about fatness for sometime now and I’ve made heaps of work about my chub as a result. I’ve made documentaries about it, short films, presented cult fat beauty pageants and even spent 24 hours giving out anti-fat shaming cards on the London Underground.
From Wivenhoe, With Love
2017 marks the 50th year since the partial decriminalisation of sex between men in England and Wales - Essex based artist Scottee is using this anniversary to focus on the lives of two trailblazers who set the then sleepy fishing village of Wivenhoe alight.
